Praça 8 de Maio was today the stage for the XIII Festa da Arrufada, an initiative organized by the Ethnographic Group of the Coimbra Region, which seeks to recreate in the old Largo de Sansão, currently Praça 8 de Maio, a sale of arrufadas that traditionally took place on Saturday of Alleluia in which the godparents went to downtown to buy their items to give to their godchildren. To the sound of group members’ announcements, many people purchased and took home their item. And today, it wasn’t exactly the godparents, but many residents and visitors who took advantage of the sale of these traditional Coimbra cakes to sweeten the weekend, quickly making the 500 cakes that the group took to Praça 8 de Maio if they were exhausted.

Today, helping to make it a success was the fact that the Festa da Arrufada took place in the same space as the traditional Feira de Velharias, which meant that even more people were seduced by the appearance and smell of this very traditional sweet from the region of Coimbra, as Pedro Fernandes and Bela Gonçalves, members of the Ethnographic Group of the Coimbra Region, told Diário de Coimbra.
