Appointed as head of the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police on the eve of the murders of Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes, police chief Rivaldo Barbosa hugged the Rio de Janeiro councilor’s mother after the murder and promised the family that he would solve the crime. The revelation of Rivaldo Barbosa’s participation in the crime, with the promise that he would cover up the perpetrators, shocked Marielle’s mother, Marinete Silva, and her sister and minister Anielle Franco.
“It’s hard to put my anger into words. Because if a person appointed the day before gives approval for a crime like this… A person who told my mother that it was a matter of honor to solve the crime… Marielle trusted this citizen”, said the Minister of Racial Equality to CNN Brasil this Sunday ( 24). “Today we receive this attack. I have an upset stomach. They were sure of impunity. I am, in short, confused, sad,” she added.
Marielle’s mother, Marinete, detailed that Rivaldo Barbosa was the first official from the State of Rio de Janeiro to talk to the family after the murder of the Rio councilwoman. “He was a person my daughter trusted, and he approved barbarism like this,” she said.
In the early hours of the day, the Federal Police carried out preventive arrest warrants against three suspects involved in the murders of Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes. The targets are Chiquinho Brazão, the advisor to the State Court of Auditors (TCE) Domingos Brazão and delegate Rivaldo Barbosa, head of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro. The brothers are suspected of having Marielle killed; the delegate would have acted to protect them both.
Twelve search and seizure warrants were also carried out this Sunday by order of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
