Manufacturers in Japan announce price increases for chocolate and olive oil

The cost of raw materials has been increasing due to the atypical climate abroad, leading to continuous price increase of products such as chocolate and olive oil.

Combined with high labor and logistics costs, a heavy burden was placed on the consumer.

A Meiji announced on Friday (22) that will increase the prices of a total of 67 products, including “Kinoko no Yama” and “Takenoko no Sato”, as well as the retort packaging carê, starting on March 26th. O content of four chocolate products will be reducedwith their prices effectively rising.

The factory prices of nine products, including retort packaged kay and soups, will also rise by about 8% to 17% on April 1. Fifty-four chocolate and gum products will become more expensive by 3% to 33% from June 1st.

This is the first increase for chocolate products since last October. Meiji has always taken the position of being reluctant to increase prices, but it began to pass on the higher costs to consumers.

The reason behind this is the increase in the price of cocoa beansthe raw material for chocolate.

In Ivory Coast and Ghana, the main cocoa suppliers, producers faced poor harvests due to unusual weather.

You olive oil import prices are also increasing due to a wave of drought in Spain and other countries where olives, the main raw material for vegetable oil, are produced.

Top cooking oil manufacturers including Nisshin Oillio Group and J-Oil Mills Inc.plan to increase prices for commercial use by up to 80%starting in May.

In February, the Saizeriya Co., operator of the Italian food restaurant chain, increased the prices of extra virgin olive oil (500ml) sold in its stores ¥850 to ¥1,200.
