Twins sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for murder of man

Twin brothers Richardson Oliveira Azevedo and Ricardson Oliveira Azevedo were sentenced to 27 years and one month in prison, each, for the murder of Guilherme Alberto Martins Zaire. The victim was shot dead on August 18, 2020, around 5 pm, on Rua Vinícius de Moraes, Coroado I neighborhood, East zone of the capital.

The two defendants were provisionally detained awaiting trial and, with their conviction, began serving their sentence provisionally.

The trial was carried out by the 1st Court of the Jury of the District of Manaus on Tuesday (26/03), under the presidency of judge Roseane do Vale. The Public Ministry was represented by prosecutor Vivaldo Castro de Souza. The defendants had public defender Rafael Albuquerque Maia in their defense.

Richardson Oliveira Azevedo and Ricardson Oliveira Azevedo were denounced by the Public Ministry as having been subject to the penalties of art. 121, paragraph 2, items I (futile motive), IV (resource that made the victim’s defense difficult) of the Penal Code.

Complaint

According to the complaint filed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the crime was related to fights between members of criminal drug trafficking factions.

During the trial, the prosecutor supported the defendants’ request for conviction under the terms of the Complaint and the Indictment Decision (in which the judge ordered that the defendants be submitted to a popular jury). The defense requested acquittal, due to the denial of authorship and, in a subsidiary way, the removal of the qualification of the futile reason.

After the plenary session and debates between the prosecution and defense, the jurors voted to convict the brothers, accepting all the terms of the complaint.

The sentence can be appealed.
