“What’s going on, after all? Why so much agitation at a time when we have everything to take Frelimo out of power? [Frente de Libertação de Moçambique] of power?”, asked Araújo, in a letter to which Lusa had access.

The politician, who is also a member of the Renamo National Council, also asked about who benefits from the public disagreements between the wing of the current party president, Ossufo Momade, and Venâncio Mondlane and Elias Dhlakama, deputies and members of the organization who have already announced the intention of running for leadership of the political force.

“I’m saddened by the tone and the insults. It doesn’t even seem like we belong to the same house, Renamo,” he said.

“Do we want to ruin everything and hand over the gold that belongs to us to the ‘bandits’?” asked Manuel de Araújo.

” outside the party’s statutes”.

Elias Dhlakama is one of the most prominent generals from the former Renamo guerrilla and brother of the late president and founder of the party, Afonso Dhlakama,

In the letter, the mayor of Quelimane (center) also condemned the “improperties launched” by Renamo spokesperson, José Manteigas, in an interview with a television channel, against Venâncio Mondlane.

Manuel de Araújo lamented the fact that the leadership of the main opposition party and Venâncio Mondlane disputed in public the merits of two precautionary measures taken by this deputy to schedule the Renamo congress and to annul acts carried out by Ossufo Momade, under the argument the current leader’s term has already ended.

Following the precautionary measure to schedule the next congress, the leadership of the main opposition party and Venâncio Mondlane reached an agreement so that Renamo’s main meeting will be held between May 15th and 16th.

Regarding the acts of Ossufo Momade contested by Mondlane, the Judicial Court of the City of Maputo considered there to be no illegality, retreating in relation to a first decision, in which it annulled “structuring acts” carried out by the leader.

Ossufo Momade has led Renamo since January 17, 2019, following the death of Afonso Dhlakama, in May 2018, with the mandate of the party bodies expiring on January 17.

Last week, Ossufo Momade said, in a podcast by the non-governmental organization Centro de Integridade Pública, that he intends to move towards re-candidacy for the leadership of Renamo.

In addition to Venâncio Mondlane, former head of the party’s list in the local elections in Maputo, and Elias Dhlakama, former deputy Juliano Picardo has also expressed his intention to participate in the race.

Manuel de Araújo has already said he is also studying this possibility.
