Teachers will request an urgent meeting with the new Minister of Education

Teachers want to meet with the Minister of Education, Fernando Alexandre, as soon as he takes office, because of the problems with digital exams. They ask for the cancellation of the assessment tests and the holding of the 9th year exams on paper.

Two months before the tests are held, schools consider that they have already there is no time to solve problems with the internet and broken computers with the approximately 6.6 million euros made available around a week ago by the previous government.

“The biggest problem facing schools is the lack of connectivity in some schools, the lack of computer skills of some younger students and the lack of technical resources that can accompany students during exams”, points out Manuel Pereira, representative of the National Association of School Leaders.

School directors will also request an urgent meeting with Fernando Alexandre to demand full recovery of teachers’ service time.

“What we know about the new Minister of Education is a liberal idea for Education, as the electoral program itself suggests”, notes the general secretary of FENPROF, Mário Nogueira.

“What we need is not to return to association contracts, tuition vouchers or privatization. What we need is to reinforce the public school with resources, so that it can fulfill the mission enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic.”

Economist Fernando Alexandre was Secretary of State for Internal Administration in the government of Passos Coelho. He returns to take on a portfolio that brings together basic, secondary and higher education in a single ministry, as happened in the last PSD government.
