Marlon Brando built a solid career in Hollywood, establishing himself as one of the greatest actors of his generation. Considered a problematic student, Brando was expelled from more than one institution, including the Military Academy for insubordination.

In 1943, Marlon Brando moved to New York to study theater at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. It is in the city that never sleeps that he debuts as Jesus Christ in a production released the following year.

Simultaneously begins on Broadway in 1944, playing a war veteran in I Remember Mamawhere his success was so great that, two years later, he was chosen by the New York Times as the most promising actor.

In 1950, he made his film debut in the film The Men (1950), where he played a paraplegic war veteran. However, it was his iconic performance as Stanley Kowalski in the film adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) that launched him to international stardom. His intense and visceral performance earned him his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

He stood out in There’s Slime on the Pier (1954), for which he won his first Oscar for Best Actor, and The Godfather (1972), where he played the iconic Don Vito Corleone, for which he won his second Oscar for Best Actor.

Brando was also known for his difficult personality and controversial role choices. He challenged directors and producers and was known for refusing to follow scripts and improvising his lines.

But there were even more films where he stood out: Queimada! (1969) by Gillo Pontecorvo which tells the story of the Haitian Revolution, with another fictional island called Queimada; Apocalypse Now (1979) is one of the most famous films critical of the Vietnam War; Júlio Cesar (1953) adaptation of Shakespeare’s play for cinema; and Viva Zapata (1952), which tells the story of the Mexican Revolution with a script written by John Steinbeck.

Marlon Brando passed away on July 1, 2004, at the age of 80, anddue to a lung disease
