This Wednesday (24), the trial of military police officer Jean Claudio dos Reis, accused of shooting cameraman José de Ribamar Carvalho Filho, takes place at Forum Henrique de La Rocque Almeida, in Imperatriz. The crime occurred in November 2014, after the PM approached a bar located on Rua Monte Castelo, in the city center, where he fired five shots at the victim.

At the time of the crime, Jean admitted, in testimony, to having consumed drugs on the night of the incident and claimed not to remember the cameraman’s murder. Furthermore, during the investigations, it was discovered that hours after José Ribamar’s murder, Jean had also killed another man in the Bacuri neighborhood.

The PM was arrested at the time of the crime, but was released in 2015, due to the lack of overwhelming evidence that incriminated him, in addition to controversies related to the investigations. According to the Public Ministry’s complaint, the PM committed the crime out of revenge, after being reported by the cameraman for attacking two of the victim’s nephews days before the murder.

The person responsible for the accusation is the prosecutor of the 8th Criminal Justice Prosecutor’s Office of Imperatriz, Thiago Quintanilha. The Public Ministry of Maranhão asks that Jean Claudio be sentenced to 12 to 30 years in prison in a closed regime, for qualified homicide, as the crime was committed for a futile reason and with an appeal that made the victim’s defense difficult.

Understand more about the crime:

According to the Public Ministry’s complaint, on the night of November 29, 2014, cameraman José de Ribamar Carvalho Filho was in a bar, accompanied by his two daughters, when PM Jean Claudio dos Reis Apinajé arrived at the scene carrying a gun. The police investigation records show that the police officer hit the victim with five gunshots, causing fatal injuries. Investigations revealed that the attack gave the victim no chance of defense, who was cornered and shot in the back.

The complaint highlighted that the PM planned the murder of the victim, using a band to cover a tattoo that could facilitate identification and making sure in advance that the victim’s superior was absent. Furthermore, Jean Claudio was recognized by witnesses and security camera images, and admitted to being under the influence of drugs at the time of the crime.

Furthermore, one of the daughters reported that after committing the crime, Jean went to her paternal grandfather’s house, where he fired several firearms into the house. The main motivation behind the crime is that the victim had reported the PM after he attacked two of his nephews in a police attack days before the crime.

Given the circumstances presented, the Public Prosecutor’s Office filed a complaint against Jean Claude dos Reis Apinajé for the crimes of qualified homicide, requesting his trial by the Jury Court and conviction with the penalties provided for by law.
