Who is the victim

Rodrigo Marinho Crespo was 42 years old and was a founding partner of a firm focused on business law. He graduated from PUC-RJ (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro) and also had a postgraduate degree in Civil Business Law from FGV (Fundação Getulio Vargas).

The firm’s areas of practice include Entertainment and Gaming Law and the cryptoactive market. The description of the first topic, on the office’s website, informs activities in segments such as state lotteries and consultancy for the implementation of operations related to games that have legal support, such as horse racing and poker tournaments. Crespo wrote on LinkedIn that he used to speak there about regulating the Brazilian lottery gaming market and betting registration.

Rodrigo’s girlfriend gave a statement to the police last month. According to her, her boyfriend said that “the office had lost important clients, who were going through financial problems, having even sold their car, a Mercedes-Benz.”

Two days before his death, Rodrigo told his girlfriend that he needed to leave to deal with business matters with a person called Marcelo. The meeting would be at Clube Naval Piraquê, in Lagoa, south of the city. He said he could not take his cell phone to the meeting because it involved important matters.

Days before the execution, the lawyer allegedly told her that he would be raising funds to open a new business and that he needed to find the “operator”. According to the lawyer’s girlfriend, the operator would be Marcelo and the lawyer even traveled to São Paulo a few times to deal with matters related to online casinos.
