Released this Thursday (25), a clipping of the Softex Observatorystudy and research unit of the Association for Promoting Brazilian Software Excellence (Softex), indicates that the female participation in the technology sector it has even grown, but there is still a long way to go. Although women make up 51% of the economically active population in the country, men make up 75% of professionals of the sector.

The participation of female professionals in the Software and ICT Services Industry (ISSTIC) grew from 33,196 in 2015 for 43,990 in 2021increase of 32.5%. Breaking it down, the presence is 25% in the software industry, 23% in ICT services and 13% in telecommunications. In the case of men, the increase was 31.6%.

The proportion of women remained stable across a number of occupations, such as analysts (26%), engineers (12%), managers (32%), programmers (22%), and technologists (23%). And there was a drop in female representation in occupations such as directors (from 22% to 15.4%), administrators (from 20.6% to 18.7%) and technicians (from 11.3% to 6.5%). Furthermore, women received on average 79% of the salary paid to men.

“With lower remuneration than men, underrepresentation in the workforce of around 25% and occupancy of just 32.1% in managerial positions, it is clear that this scenario requires significant acceleration towards the ambitious goal of reaching 50 % of female representation by 2030”, analyzes Elisa Carlos, head of operations at Softex. “The adjustment of this disparity is occurring extremely slowly, suggesting that policies, investments, incentives and promotion of women must be prioritized.”

According to Softex, the government, companies and academia have made efforts to promote gender diversity in the sector, offering training programs, mentoring and inclusive spaces to encourage women to enter and excel in the IT area. Despite this, in 2021, only 16.5% of enrollments in courses in the area were women.
