UA pocket watch found with the body of John Jacob Astor IV, the richest man aboard the Titanic, will be auctioned from Saturday.
According to the responsible auctioneer, Henry & Aldridge & Son, the bidding was 60 thousand pounds, around 70 thousand euros. According to those responsible, it is believed that the object could be sold for 150 thousand pounds, around 175 thousand euros.
The object, which has the initials JJA engraved on it, is made of 14 carats of gold, and was recovered days after the boat sank, in April 1912.
In addition to the watch, a diamond ring and gold and diamond cufflinks were found with the remains of the man, in his 40s.
“Astor is well known as the richest passenger aboard the RMS Titanic and was considered one of the richest people in the world at the time, with a net worth of around $87 million (equivalent to several billion dollars today) “, wrote the auction house.
According to British publications, Astor was on the Titanic with his wife of 18 years, whom he had recently married.. The two were traveling through Europe and also through North Africa after the controversy surrounding their marriage – given the age difference. They were returning home to the United States when the vessel sank.
The millionaire even tried to get into a lifeboat with his wife, who survived the tragedy, but was told that the women and children needed to be rescued first.
The watch was restored after being returned to the family and used by family members.
