Paulo Alexandre Abreu is the son of Paulo Abreu, president of the board of the Union of Parishes of Candoso Santiago and Mascotelos.

Paulo Alexandre Abreu began his handball journey in Fermentões, having won the title of national beginners champion in the 2009/2010 season, and the club from Guimarães, now associated with Vitória SC, announces that it received “with deep sadness the news of his death of the former athlete”, remembering that from an early age he was “an example of dedication, determination and the right values ​​both in sport and in life, which he maintained to this day. An example of an athlete who always maintained affection for those who crossed his path and for all those with whom he shared the field and great moments”.

Mauro Fernandes, president of Xico Andebol, a club from Guimarães whose jersey Paulo Abreu has worn since 2015/16 recalls “his passion for handball and our club. A passion that was evident in every game he played and in every moment he spent with his teammates. His departure leaves us deeply saddened and is an irreparable loss for all of us. Paulo Abreu will always be part of the history of Xico Andebol and in the hearts of each one of us.”

Due to the death of Paulo Abreu, the club, for which the athlete won the title of national champion of the 2nd division in the 2020/2021 season, lowered its flag to half mast, canceled all training sessions and postponed practically all final meetings. weekend, enabling the club’s athletes to participate in the funeral scheduled for this Saturday. The senior team’s game, against Nazaré Dom Fuas, was postponed until May 5th. The Guimarães club promises to pay “a worthy tribute to our beloved Paulo Abreu, honoring his memory and his legacy within our sporting family”.

However, in response to the request of the management of Clube Desportivo Xico Andebol, the Federation declared a minute of silence in memory of Paulo Abreu at the weekend’s meetings.

This Friday, at the beginning of the Press Conference to launch the game with Boavista, Álvaro Pacheco, the coach of Vitória SC, offered his condolences “to Xico Andebol and the family on the death of the athlete Paulo Abreu”.

Vitória Sport Clube, in a note posted on the official website, expresses its deep regret at the athlete’s death: “A native of Guimarães, Paulo showed, at all times, to be an example of dedication and dedication to the sport of Handball. To family, friends and, especially, CD Xico Andebol, in this moment of pain and deep sadness, Vitória Sport Clube extends its sincere condolences”.

The president of Guimarães City Council, Domingos Bragança, also expressed his dismay at the death of Paulo Alexandre Mendes Abreu, offering his family and friends “the most heartfelt condolences”.

In the municipality’s note of condolence, the mayor praises the player’s time at Fermentões and Xico Andebol, the two Guimarães clubs with a tradition in handball, and for the University of Minho team, and the titles he won.
