UA ‘serial killer’, who was wanted by the French police for 35 years, participated, with his face uncovered, in a television program, in 2019, two years before he died, in 2021.
The video of the moment was found by the French weekly magazine Marianne and the story quickly gained attention in the press. François Vérove, known as “le Grêlé”, was a serial killer who eluded authorities for 35 years. The former police officer was wanted for several homicides and rapes between the 1980s and 1990s.
“You were a police officer”, that’s how the presenter of the program ‘Tout Le Monde Veut Prendre Sa Place’ began by addressing participant François, in 2019.
With gray hair and beard, the man talks about his career, in what seems like a perfectly normal appearance on the game show.
The man, according to BFMTV, lived in the La Grande-Motte region, before committing suicide in 2021, when he learned that he was about to be unmasked, after 35 years on the run, using his DNA.
The death occurred hours before being summoned by the police. In a letter, he explained that he had killed as a result of a “mad rage”, but that he had not reoffended since 1997. There are nine homicides, between 1983 and 1994, that can be attributed to him, making him one of the worst serial killers in France.
Patricia Tourancheau, journalist and author of the book ‘Le Grêlé: Le tueur était un flic’, had already revealed in her book that François’ wife, who was unaware of his past, had mentioned this trip to television.
