US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida are preparing to present, in April, a plan to renew American military command in Japan.

According to the newspaper Financial Times, the decision is related to shared concerns regarding China. The plan involves reinforcing operational planning and military exercises between the two countries, the newspaper said, citing sources that follow the situation closely. This is the largest reinforcement of its kind in more than 60 years.

Apparently, the restructuring plan should be announced at the White House, in Washington DC, on April 10th. On that date, the Financial TimesPrime Minister Kishida will be received at a formal event, which will include dinner and a working meeting.

Close in geographical terms to countries such as China or North Korea, Japan is a close ally of the United States and a key part of the American strategy for security in the region.

When questioned by Reuters, neither the White House nor the American National Security Council responded on the topic. The State Department also remained silent. The Tokyo government was not questioned about the matter, the agency said.

Recently, Washington has been supporting Japan’s military buildup, strengthening relations between both countries. More than a year ago, Tokyo committed to doubling defense spending to 2% of its GDP and purchasing missiles that can hit ships or land targets more than a thousand kilometers away. Furthermore, he also considered the expansion of Chinese military power to be a “serious concern” for the international community.

An ally of the United States, Japan regularly has its waters invaded by North Korean ballistic missiles. Launched by Pyongyang (a historic enemy of the United States in the region), these missiles end up falling into the Sea of Japan.
