It started with the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and has never stopped. What is World Central Kitchen, the NGO attacked in Gaza?

Israeli attack killed seven NGO workers this Monday.

Seven workers from the World Central Kitchen, citizens of Australia, Great Britain and Poland, were killed in an Israeli air strike in central Gaza this Monday.

The non-governmental organization World Central Kitchen, based in the USA, was created by famous chef Jose Andres, who has already received two Michelin stars, and his wife Patrícia. It was created in 2010, following a major earthquake in Haiti, with the aim of providing emergency food aid to survivors.

But World Central Kitchen expanded, and from that year onwards it also began providing meals and support to survivors of other natural disasters, as well as refugees and people affected by war.

According to ReutersWorld Central Kitchen has served tens of millions of meals in Ukraine since the 2022 Russian invasion.

It was involved in the first delivery of aid to Gaza via a maritime corridor from Cyprus in March. A second shipment of maritime aid, containing 332 tonnes of food, was due to arrive in Gaza early this week.

Founder Andres is a Spanish-American chef and cookbook author. His restaurant ‘minibar by Jose Andres’ in Washington, DC, USA, has two Michelin stars. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama in 2015.
