A A 12-year-old girl who was forced to marry a 63-year-old priest is under police protection in Accra, Ghana, after the marriage caused a wave of outrage in the African country. The minor’s mother is also receiving support from the police.

The ceremony took place on Saturday and was attended by dozens of members of the Nungua community. The man, who heads a sect, chose the girl when the child was just 6 years old.

The child should then participate in another ceremony, to be purified and empowered to fulfill her responsibilities as the wife of Father ‘Gborbu Wulomo’. However, before this ceremony took place, Ghanaian authorities located and took custody of the girl, writes Extra.

There are those who even call for the priest to be arrested. “The law says it is illegal to marry a 12-year-old girl,” African Education Watch executive director Kofi Asare wrote on Facebook.

The minimum age to marry in Ghana is 18 years old. Although the prevalence of child marriage is decreasing, it still exists in the country.

During the wedding, the girl was advised to dress provocatively for her new husband and to use the perfumes that the guests offered her, to increase her ‘sex appeal’.
