Ohe US secret services concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin was not involved in the death of Russian opponent Alexei Navalny, who died in a penal colony in the Arctic in February.
The information is being advanced this Saturday by the Wall Street Journal, which cites unidentified sources familiar with the matter.
The discovery was “widely accepted within the intelligence community and shared by several agencies, including the Central Intelligence Agency, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the State Department’s intelligence unit.”
The assessment was based on a series of information, including from some secret services, in addition to an analysis of public facts, such as the moment of Navalny’s death and the way he overshadowed Putin’s re-election in March.
According to the American publication, the country’s intelligence agencies determined that the Russian president did not order Navalny’s death, despite accusations from the West. However, they did not rule out Putin’s responsibility, as the opposition politician, who died aged 47, was targeted by Russian authorities for years, arrested for political reasons and poisoned in 2020.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said this Saturday that he had already seen the Wall Street Journal article, which he considered to be “empty speculation.” “I saw the material, I wouldn’t say it is high-quality material that deserves attention,” Peskov told journalists, quoted by the Reuters news agency.
It should be noted that the declared critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime and charismatic defender of the fight against corruption, Navalny died at the age of 47 under circumstances that are still unclear.
Prison services said he suffered a sudden collapse after a walk in the Arctic penal colony where he was serving a 19-year sentence for extremism and the death certificate mentions a natural cause. However, his associates, widow and many Western leaders accuse Putin of being responsible for his death.
