With more than 10 new works, the “Clube” exhibition inaugurates the Maxwell Alexandre 3 Pavilion, which has already visited São Cristóvão and Rocinha

Born and raised in Rocinha, visual artist Maxwell Alexandre will occupy the entire mansion of the City History Museum, in Gávea (RJ), starting this March. He will inaugurate the Maxwell Alexandre 3 Pavilion with the “Clube” exhibition, with more than ten new works.

Pavilion is the name of the itinerant institution founded by him, in 2023, which will arrive at the City History Museum next Saturday (23), at 11am. Entry is free for everyone and free. In the exhibition, the public will be able to see the works of Maxwell Alexandre, his personal experiences and the peripheral culture in which he grew up.

The ‘Clube’ series was born in 2020, when I became a member of the Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, in Gávea, a neighborhood neighboring the Rocinha favela, where I was born and raised. With this entry, I was able to have free access to the famous and desired ’tile pools’, as my mother used to call the pools built with tiles, which became one of the biggest dreams I had as a child”, recalls the artist.

In his works, based on the appropriation of visual codes that are widely circulated in the periphery, he discusses and reframes the role of black culture in society. One of the main names in contemporary art today, the Rio native expanded his work abroad, with two unprecedented exhibitions in Paris and Madrid last year. In February, he occupied the pilotis of the Rio Art Museum (MAR) with another edition of his project “Descoloração Global”, offering the public the chance to platinum their hair for free.

The City History Museum turns 90 in July and this is one of the many actions and attractions that mark the very special year of 2024 for the space that belongs to the Municipal Department of Culture. In March, also due to Rio de Janeiro’s 459th anniversary, the Museum has already been the stage for several projects, with emphasis on “Música na Praça”, an art, creative economy and gastronomy fair organized by Point Carioca Feiras.

Another novelty and highlight of the 90th anniversary party is the launch of the museum’s website, completely redesigned, created by the Association of Friends of the Museum with resources from the Rouanet Law, via Instituto Cultural Vale: Museudacidadedorio.com.br

I am very satisfied with the result of the new work, which has given me a real sense of freedom. I’ve never felt so free. A new moment. The institution welcomed Pavilion 3 with open arms, a commendable partnership that strengthens the Rio art circuit. The City History Museum is the perfect context for the launch of the Clube series, due to its location in Gávea and its proximity to my favela”, highlights Maxwell.

The Museum, located on Estrada Santa Marinha (Gávea), within Parque da Cidade, is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9am to 4pm. The exhibition, which runs from 03/23 to 06/23, has, like the other areas of the municipal equipment, free entry for all audiences.
