Brasilia businesswoman helps build a Brazil of new authors

-

There are those who say that books are like keys that open doors to imaginary universes, defying reality and expanding the horizons of our minds beyond the limits of the known. They invite you to explore the frontiers of critical thinking, to acquire knowledge and skills, being an inexhaustible source of inspiration and personal growth, thus contributing to the evolution of society.

In addition to the pure pleasure of reading, there are those who see books as a universe full of other opportunities. This happened with journalist Hulda Rode. She, together with Guilherme Vicente de Morais, is the founder of Escreva, a startup from Brasilia specialized in training new authors, with the mission of helping people write their first book, being an example of success.

The brand originates from Hulda’s childhood dream and began to blossom precisely on February 5, 2020, with the intention of impacting and transforming lives in profound ways. “I always liked the world of books. I painted, drew, wrote stories, chronicles and poems. It was in those moments that I felt welcomed,” she recalls.

Escreva, however, was born as a company in the communications segment, in 2017, after Hulda realized that she needed a new purpose in life. Looking at photographic records, she understood that her life mission was to dedicate herself to writing.

Over time, Hulda matured the business idea and devised a strategy so that her enterprise could offer help to a greater number of people. After being informed that she could make a contractual change to her CNPJ (National Register of Legal Entities) to transform her company into a publishing house, the writer promptly made the change. Being self-taught in the publishing world, she obtained a prefix from the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) to begin her operations in the market. “Our business model is unprecedented in Brazil because we teach, develop and accelerate the person or group of individuals who will begin the journey of writing their first book. We work with new authors, while other publishers give preference to those who already have a name in the market,” she says.

In addition to leading Escreva’s operations, Hulda is also an established writer in the Brazilian publishing market. Her books cover deep themes, from patient biographies to reflections on loneliness and obesity.

Sebrae’s support in the Federal District played a fundamental role in Escreva’s growth. Hulda learned about the institution’s work in 2012, when she began seeking knowledge in the business area and participated in workshops and other activities aimed at formalizing small businesses and understanding other topics relevant to entrepreneurs.

The relationship with Sebrae became closer over the years, when the institution began to offer specialized consultancy. It was through this support that Hulda was able to model its business plan, improve services and participate in solutions such as the Local Innovation Agents Program (ALI) and the Brasil Mais Produtivo Program. Over the last two years, Escreva participated in Sebrae For Startups, a solution whose objective is to support and strengthen the innovation ecosystem, establish connections between startups and business partners and drive new science and technology solutions, fostering innovative actions.

“I usually say that Sebrae has a place of honor within Escreva’s organization chart. Everything I needed to learn, everything I needed to develop, I found at Sebrae. He is a technical partner for those who presented my ideas, my dreams and they helped make them come true”, assures Hulda.

An example of the publishing house’s growth is the number of authors who have already benefited over the last four years. Escreva began offering services in 2020 with just five and currently has 120 authors who have published technical works in areas such as administration, law, economics, education and health, in addition to various biographies, which transform anonymous people into protagonists. The books are written by main and co-authored authors. The entire publishing service is carried out by the Escreva team, as well as all the marketing of the works, which can be delivered in Brazil and around the world.

As Escreva grows and we identify a new pain, we already know that it is time to empower ourselves again. As the routine is busy, we prefer consultancies that Sebrae always offers to apply in our daily lives”, she adds.

Hulda also participated, last year, in the Sebrae Business Woman Award, an initiative that values and encourages female entrepreneurship in Brazil, recognizing the work and dedication of women entrepreneurs who contribute to the country’s development. She came third in the Small Business category. “I consider the award to be an Oscar for entrepreneurship and for me, it was a gift. It showed that Escreva is a business that has made a difference for people. It was a seal of approval from Sebrae that gives strength to my business to remain strong”, she reveals.

Recently, Hulda kicked off the publishing company’s activities in São Paulo and also in Rio de Janeiro. Later, in 2024, she plans to launch two more books of her own, a practical guide on how to write biographies, continue the mentoring program and the cultural training project, and emanate efforts for the recently launched education platform of the brand, Escreva Labs. “Our flight plan is to continue helping to build a Brazil of new authors”, she concludes.
