Portugal is about to take a significant step in encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles, with the introduction of automatic payment terminals (TPA) integrated into electric chargers on public roads. This measure, which aims to facilitate and speed up the charging process, marks a crucial step forward in the development of sustainable mobility infrastructure in the country.

Volt-E, an electric vehicle charger company, anticipates ongoing regulatory changes.

Until now, electric vehicle users in Portugal faced the challenge of using RFID cards (CEME) or mobile applications to access public charging points. This situation generated unnecessary complexity, with the need for loyalty cards.

However, a new scenario is emerging with the implementation of the European Union’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR). This regulation establishes the obligation for public charging stations for electric vehicles installed after April 13, 2024 to integrate payment card readers, including the option of payment via bank card. This measure, which is expected to be completed by January 1, 2027, will not only simplify the charging process for electric vehicle users, but could also revolutionize the way drivers approach electric mobility.

The brand’s electric vehicle chargers, to be installed today, already incorporate automatic payment terminals (TPA), which accept payment through Portuguese and foreign bank cards, anticipating regulatory requirements and providing a more convenient charging experience for users.

Although there are still challenges to overcome in the electric vehicle charging system in Portugal, the introduction of payment through TPA represents a significant step in the right direction. This measure not only simplifies users’ lives, but also contributes to the creation of a more unified and transparent system for electric mobility in the country.
