The demand for tests to detect Covid-19 soared in February, especially after Carnival, growing by up to 444% in pharmacies in Greater Vitória compared to the previous month. Some establishments have faced occasional shortages, while others warn of possible difficulties in maintaining stocks.

In the Santa Lúcia network, given the increase in demand and the number of cases, the tests carried out by the pharmacist and issuing a report were resumed this week. But there was also a significant increase in demand for self-tests, as explained by the marketing team.

“It was an increase of approximately 444% in sales, when compared to January and February. There is already a potential difficulty in replenishing the stock of these self-tests.”

At Drogarias Pacheco, growth was 178% more than the same period in 2023, according to the commercial and marketing director of the DPSP Group, Marcos Colares.

“Comparing January this year with the post-carnival period, demand grew 106% in the Metropolitan Region of Espírito Santo. Due to this significant growth, there was a momentary limitation in the availability of the test, but the issue has already been resolved and the stores are being replenished.”

The Pague Menos network also observed an increase in demand for Covid-19 tests in pharmaceutical offices and in the sale of self-tests. “In anticipation of seasonality, the company had already guaranteed sufficient stock in all its stores in Brazil, avoiding shortages for customers”, informed the company, in a note.

The RD-RaiaDrogasil group did not provide regionalized data, however, according to the company, there is no lack of tests. Even so, they point out that there was an increase in demand across the country, with an average growth of 25% since the week before Carnival.

The Farmes chain also did not register any problems, according to information obtained from the marketing department at the headquarters, in Cobilândia, Vila Velha.
