A Paris 2024 Olympics will have a team of 30,000 volunteers, with another 15,000 selected for the Paralympic Games, the event’s Organizing Committee said this Friday.
Around 20% of volunteers come from other countries, after being selected from a group of 300,000 applicants. The verification process has not yet been completed, the committee said.
The London Games in 2012 had 70,000 volunteers, while Tokyo planned to have 110,000 before the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The number of volunteers assigned to the Paris 2024 Games is in line with our needs and our project, with the aim of giving them a real mission, so that they feel useful,” the committee said in a statement sent to Reuters.
“The size of the volunteer program depends on the number of competition venues and the number of sports in the Games program, which may change from one edition to the next,” he informed.
The volunteer program begins on Saturday, with the Volunteer Convention at Paris La Defense Arena, with a presentation by the president of Paris-2024, Tony Estanguet, and the announcement of the uniform they will wear during the event.
