However, there are still museums fighting for public attention

Most of the world’s main museums have recovered stability after the crisis caused by Covid-19, which forced them to close their doors, managing to attract the same number of visitors as before the pandemic.

A survey carried out by the specialized online newspaper theartnewspaper.com, cited this Tuesday by the agency Efe, points out that museums are returning to normality and that during 2023 many of the largest in the world recorded numbers of visitors similar to those in 2019, the year prior to forced closure.

Some even received exactly the same number of visitors, such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, which received around 2.7 million people in both 2019 and 2023, supported by the exhibition of works by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer.

The National Museum of Scotland had the same experience with 2.2 million in both years and the Getty Villa in Los Angeles with 442 thousand pre-pandemic and 443 thousand in 2023.

The top 100 museums welcomed a combined 175 million people in 2023, compared to 141 million in the previous year, but still far from the 230 million before the closure caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Other museums are still fighting for public attention, such as Moscow museums hit by the war with Ukraine and the collapse of foreign tourism, while the UK’s top ten are also globally 13% below pre-pandemic levels, according to with this means of social communication.

According to theartnewapaper, New York’s museums continue the trend, with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) registering more than 2.8 million visitors in 2023, 2% more than in 2018, when it was operating at full capacity before opening its doors for just six months in 2019, for renovations.

In contrast, the Whitney received 26% fewer visitors (768,000) in 2023 compared to the pre-pandemic level.
