On World Kidney Day, celebrated this Thursday (14), data from the Ministry of Health shows that the organ is the most awaited in the country’s transplant queue, with 39,087 patients in the queue. The number is 1,648.8% greater than liver surgery, which appears in second place on the list, with 2,235 people. The date serves as a way for the medical community to draw attention to preventative care that can help maintain kidney health.

According to the Ministry of Health, the majority of patients are men between 50 and 64 years old. However, 54 children of both sexes, aged 0 to 5, are also waiting for a compatible organ.

The state with the largest number of people on the waiting list is São Paulo, with 19,234 patients, followed by Minas Gerais, with 3,559, and Bahia, with 2,098. See the details in the graph below:

The ministry explains that the kidneys are fundamental to the functioning of the body, as they filter the blood and help eliminate toxins from the body.

Risk factors include smoking, obesity and diabetes. See the full list:
• People with diabetes (either type 1 or type 2);

• People with obesity (BMI > 30 kg/m²);
• History of circulatory system disease (coronary disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, heart failure);
• History of Chronic Kidney Disease in the family;
• Smoking; It is
• Use of nephrotoxic agents, especially medications that require adjustments in patients with altered renal function.

“The prevention of chronic kidney diseases is directly related to people’s lifestyles and living conditions. Treating and controlling risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, cardiovascular diseases and smoking are the main ways to prevent diseases”, explains the Ministry of health.
