Data Ministry of Health published this Monday (18) showed that the Brazil surpassed the mark of 1.8 million dengue cases in 2024. In this way, the country breaks the record for the year with the highest number of contaminations by illness.

In total, Brazil registered 1,889,206 cases, including probable and confirmed. The previous record was in 2015, with 1,688,688.

When compared to the same period last year, Brazil registered 400,197 cases.

In addition, there were 561 confirmed deaths from the disease during the year. Another 1,020 cases are being investigated. In the same period in 2023, there were 257 deaths.

Symptoms

The main symptoms of dengue are:

– High fever;

– Pain in the body and joints;

– Pain behind the eyes;

– Malaise;

– Headache;

– Red spots on the body;

– Intense and continuous abdominal pain;

– Persistent vomiting;

– Accumulation of liquids;

– Mucosal bleeding;

– Irritability.

Main precautions

The main way to prevent dengue is reduce Aedes aegypti mosquito infestation, an insect responsible for transmitting the virus that causes the disease. To do this, it is recommended:

– To maintain reservoirs or water tanks covered with lids, screens or covers, preventing the Aedes aegypti mosquito from laying its eggs;

– Avoid standing water in tires, cans, empty bottles or gutters;

– Carry out regular cleaning of the water tank.

Furthermore, some personal protective care is essential, especially in areas at high risk for mosquito bites. Therefore, the use of: shirts or pants to cover areas of the body that are most exposed; mosquito nets on doors, windows and/or on the bed; It is repellents based on DEET (NN-diethylmetatoluamide), IR3535 or Icaridin.
