Doctors at the Víctor Lazarte Hospital, in La Libertad, Peru, were faced with a peculiar situation. A ten-month-old baby entered the health unit with serious complaints and after an x-ray, a metal crucifix was detected lodged in the esophagus.
The team of healthcare professionals managed to successfully remove the object. The operation was a big challenge for doctors who had to use an endoscope and special forceps, reveals the Channel N.
“The procedure was very complicated because the crucifix was lodged in the upper part of the esophagus. The first attempts to remove it were unsuccessful because it was stuck. We tried several times until we succeeded”, reveals Luis Esteves Cabanillas, the doctor responsible for the operation, quoted by Reuters.
The extraction of the object was achieved after more than six hours of trying to stabilize the minor. The baby’s parents describe the event as a miracle and are relieved and grateful to the doctors for the success of the operation.
“I thank the doctors for their miraculous work. It’s like starting over, it’s a gift, a blessing, a miracle”, says Maricarmen Sajami Rosas, the child’s mother.
