Through the Commander of the National Maritime Authority (AMN), Rui Manuel Teixeira, the Port Authority of Porto Santo provided information about the cleaning and collection of sargassum on the beach of Ilha Dourada.

As revealed in a statement, maritime authorities came to the attention of “some concerns regarding the cleaning of Porto Santo beach, given the deposition observed in recent weeks of large quantities of sargassum”.

Rui Manuel Teixeira emphasizes that the Port Authority of Porto Santo “does not oppose the exercise of any type of activities that promote the protection and conservation of the Maritime Public Domain”.

Beach cleaning “is an activity that we all encourage and support”, he adds, “as it contributes to the preservation and conservation of the marine environment”.

However, it warns that “it is important to distinguish between beach cleaning carried out individually or in groups with the aim of preserving the environment, and the collection of sargassum for commercial purposes, which, as it is the exercise of an economic activity, requires the issuance of a license by the Port Authority where it is exercised and has associated costs”.

Therefore, he hopes that “it will help to dispel any misconceptions that may exist”, thanking “everyone for their continued commitment to preserving our magnificent sand and we encourage everyone to continue to do their part to keep our beach clean”.
