Albufeira honored eight women on International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day, March 8, was celebrated three times in Albufeira with books, an exhibition on women in the fish canning industry and, the usual tribute to eight women from the municipality, as well as receiving flowers and preserves, with the The focus was on combating domestic violence against women.

Three moments marked the Women’s Day celebrations in Albufeira, last Friday. A day in which all women serving the Municipality, totaling 948, received a book written by Albufeirense Dina Santos, a gift from the Municipality, entitled “Maria – captiva me and the game will be mine”.

Born in Germany, the author lives in Parish of Guia, has a degree in Human Resources Management and writes novels. The work tells of a young woman who gives up on an engagement and ends up getting involved with a bullfighter from Salamanca.

I understood that this offer, a book that talks about today’s women, for today’s women, would be important in order to strengthen bonds of unity in view of the much that still needs to be done for equal rights”, said the councilor responsible for Social Action, Cláudia Guedelha.

Another moment to highlight was the exhibition “Preserved images: the woman”, in a partnership between the Municipality and the National Association of Fish Canned Industry, with the images on display being the result of a national competition. Alongside the exhibition, it is also possible to appreciate the smocks worn by women in the canning industries. The exhibition is on display on the 1st floor of the Town Hall, until April 8th.

At the end of the afternoon, the 6th edition of “Distinção – Albufeira Mulher 2024” took place at Salão Nobre, which recognizes eight women from the municipality every year. This year, the attention fell on Ana Cristina Marciano, 59 years old (commerce, fish seller), Dilita Machado, 70 years old (Public Service), Eva Bento, 23 years old (Sports), Maria Inácia Marrachinho, 63 years old (Transport ), Patrícia Seromenho, 52 years old (Solidarity), Paula Melo, 61 years old (Health), Regina Leandro, 72 years old (Hospitality) and Susana Monteiro, 43 years old (Socorros Náufragos).

Highlighting eight women from the municipality on this day, the president of Albufeira City Council, José Carlos Rolo, stressed that “The women we distinguish today represent all women who deserve to be honored.” and tried to clarify that the choice aims to cover the entire territory, all ages and all work activities.

José Carlos Rolo called for the fight not to fade in the fight against domestic violence against women and recalled certain “cultures in which women are very mistreated“, whereby “there is still a long way to go”.

For his part, Francisco Oliveira, president of the Municipal Assembly of Albufeira, reinforced that this ceremony constitutes a “important recognition to celebrate the fundamental role that women have in the development of territories”. The person responsible highlighted the need for gender equality and reinforced the idea of ​​combating “archaic and retrograde mentalities”.

At the end, there was a drink for everyone, where the women received colorful gerberas and preserved fish.
