The Eco Festival Azores Burning Summer has been taking place since 2015 at Praia dos Moinhos – Porto Formoso, a special place, marked by a distinct natural beauty and a legacy of good times lived by several generations.

The Festival is not intended to be a mass musical event, but rather an event with balanced access, with reduced environmental impact, which values the quality of the public’s experience and its relationship with the surrounding nature.

The combination of an artistic and cultural program of international dimension with an ecofriendly positioning meets the standards of current demand, meeting the emerging conscious tourism, where non-massified places and commitment to environmental protection are synonymous quality and sustainability.

Music, cinema, debates, ecodesign, electric vehicles, land art, health and community actions are the ingredients that make this eco festival the perfect combination between Nature and its audience.

For 4 days, around 60 regional, national and international artists take to the festival’s three stages. Together they contribute to defining the musical identity of the event, which exudes world music, soul, jazz, dub, funk and other styles of black music. The musical direction is the result of a partnership between Filipe Tavares, founder and director of the Festival, and Adrian Sherwood, host of the event.

The MOINHOS REVIVAL program takes place on Moinhos beach, which aims to rescue the spirit of a time where freedom, friendship and the cult of good music lived side by side on that beach. The program, free of charge, extends over four days at PALCO NOS with open-air cinema, DJ sets and concerts that end in jam sessions that connect guest musicians with local musicians. In the last dawn of the festival, the public is invited to go down to the beach to witness the “Burning Love” fire installation and watch the sunrise.

The main attractions on the bill operate in Parque dos Moinhos. The sloping lawn forms a perfect natural amphitheater, the result of the environmental recovery that has been promoted by the festival organizers over the years. In between concerts on the Main Stage, the public heads to the tent set up on top of the lawn to watch the DJ sets on the Tropical Stage. The music and fun are constant.

In 2023, the festival organization will implement the same accessibility model as in previous editions, with the provision of peripheral car parks and a reinforced shuttle service with more vehicles and extended opening hours, which will connect to the beach and Parque dos Moinhos.

In addition to the musical program, Azores Burning Summer also focuses on ecological, cultural and social aspects.

With the aim of awakening collective ecological awareness, the organization implements several measures and practices that lead to behavioral changes, which in turn result in the reduction of waste and changes in consumption habits. Initiatives such as ECO MARKET (ecodesign and natural products fair), EXPO VEÍCULOS ELÉTRICOS (exhibition of various models of electric and hybrid vehicles) and ECO TALKS (debates with socio-environmental themes) mark this environmental awareness aspect of the festival.

Opening doors to reflection is the aim of the CINEMA NA PRAIA initiative, with two nights of open-air cinema on the terrace of Moinho Terrace Café on Praia dos Moinhos. This year the films “Entre Ilhas” by Amaya Sumpsi about navigation in the Azores archipelago and “Cesária Évora” by Ana Sofia Fonseca about the Cape Verdean diva will be shown.

In 2023, the festival continues with the VIVE and HABITAT Community Programs in partnership with the Parish Council and the parish of Porto Formoso.

HABITAT COMMUNITY PROGRAM

The HABITAT program aims to strengthen the feeling of belonging and appreciation for the place where one lives, through the appreciation and preservation of history, experiences and traditions, cultural and natural heritage.

In a collaboration between Okeanos – Institute for Research in Marine Sciences, within the scope of the MONIPOL project, financed by the Regional Directorate of Fisheries, and the Azores Sea Observatory through the project “Know to decide”, financed by the Regional Directorate of Science and Technology, Azores Burning Summer brings to the parish of Porto Formoso the project “Marine detectives – know the fish you eat”, with activities and games for the youngest. This initiative will take place between the 23rd and 25th of August.

“Despite being surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, children still have some difficulty in knowing and distinguishing the fish that sail here. What will be the differences between the Emperor and Alfonsim? Do all fish eat the same thing? Did we find them all at the same depth? To find out, go on an adventure and become a marine detective!”
