“O What matters to us are the concrete policies that will be implemented, not the expensive ones, although we know that, in this specific case, it is someone who voted in favor of this Common Agricultural Policy [PAC]which motivated farmers’ protests in recent months”, said CNA leader Vítor Rodrigues, speaking to Lusa.

For the CNA, the new CAP has been “quite negative” for farmers and forestry producers, and it is now important to know whether the Government and, in particular, the ministry are available to reverse this course.

The confederation considers it essential to have fair prices for production, the reversal of cuts in subsidies for vacant areas, the implementation of the Family Farming Statute, the implementation of compensation for losses caused by wild animals and the implementation of the return of Casa do Douro.

On the other hand, the CNA wants to see forests and rural development reintegrated into the Ministry of Agriculture, as well as the return of powers to the regional agriculture and fisheries departments, which were transferred to the Regional Coordination and Development Commissions (CCDR).

“These are our main priorities for this minister or any other. The question here is whether there is willingness on the other side to engage in new negotiations”, stressed the CNA leader.

Vítor Rodrigues also said that the CNA maintains the expectation that institutional relations with the Government are good, reiterating that it is important that farmers’ demands are converted into concrete measures by the executive.

Asked whether the fact that José Manuel Fernandes was elected as one of the most influential MEPs could be important in responding to the sector’s complaints, the CNA stressed that it did not share the distinction attributed, particularly with regard to the areas of agriculture.

However, he noted that he prefers “a minister outside the sector who applies concrete policies, rather than a minister from the sector who agrees with things as they are”.

José Manuel Fernandes, considered one of the most influential MEPs in the European Parliament, was Luís Montenegro’s choice to take over the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, with the fight against climate change and the fight against the loss of biodiversity among his banners.

Born in Vila Verde, Braga, the new Minister of Agriculture, who was born in 1967, has a degree in Systems and Computer Engineering from the University of Minho.
