The Municipality of Lagoa managed to reduce the volume of water purchased from the company Águas do Algarve, for public supply, by 22% in the period from the 1st to the 17th of March, compared to the same period in 2023, the municipality announced.

In real values, the volume supplied in March 2023 was 224,894 cubic meters and, in March 2024, it was 176,091 cubic meters.

The information was confirmed by the entity managing the system on the rise, Águas do Algarve, within the scope of Working Group III – Public Supply, created to deal with the alert situation in the Algarve region due to drought.

«This is the highest percentage of reduction achieved since the measures were imposed under the Resolution of the Council of Ministers no. 26-A/2024, of February 20th», adds the Chamber of Lagos.

In addition to the measures imposed by this Resolution, the Chamber of Lagoa recalls that “it had already been taking measures, since January 2023, in several areas, such as the irrigation of municipal green spaces, the maintenance of municipal buildings and decorative fountains, urban cleaning , machine park and vehicle transfer, municipal markets, on beaches, in the water and sanitation sector and in awareness campaigns carried out among the population».

For all of this, the municipality states that it welcomes “the effectiveness of the immediate response measures to reduce consumption and reinforces that investments and structuring measures are underway in the municipality to make the management of water and energy resources more efficient, especially at the level the renewal of the supply network and the installation of equipment to control water pressure and leaks».

Lagoa City Council also thanks «the understanding and collaboration of the entire population and, above all, the largest consumers, because the water crisis in the Algarve does not spare anyone».
