During Oscar season, movie theaters are taken over by productions with reflective plots. This year, it was no different; Poor Creatures, Zone of Interest and Past Lives hit the big screen before the industry’s biggest awards show. However, nominees from the Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did not dominate the box office department. “Silly” films like Everyone But You have proven their worth among acclaimed feature films.

Despite debuting alongside the 2024 Oscar nominees, Everyone But You made history in the world of cinema. The film starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the last six years. The production raised US$212 million (R$1 billion) In the whole world.

In contrast, Poor Creatures was the film with the second highest number of nominations at the 2024 Oscars, in addition to earning a best actress statuette for Emma Stone. Even so, Yorgo Lanthimos’ plot raised US$108 million (R$538 million) box office worldwide.

The Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards the best stories, performances and reflections in films. However, this criterion may be disconnected from the public. In cinemas, audiences still prefer to watch comedies or plots aimed at the whole family.

Audiences are not interested in reflective films. In movie theaters, the audience chooses to laugh, instead of thinking about their own lives and the eventual impact of the plot on society. In fact, during the Oscar weekend, Os Farofeiros 2 topped the box office: approximately half a million people watched the national production in just four days.

Cinema is a place for everyone. The audience may be looking for excitement, action or just fun. However, the public cannot leave the reflective plots aside. Debate, even through film, is necessary in a society divided by religion, politics and race. Poor Creatures, Zone of Interest and Past Lives are necessary stories.
