Born in Taiwan, where he made films such as “The Wedding Banquet” (1993) and “Eat Drinking Man Woman” (1994), Ang Lee opened one of the most successful careers in Hollywood with “Sensitivity and Common Sense” (1995). , first with the Oscar for “The Tiger and the Dragon” (2000) and then the two statuettes for Best Director with “Brokeback Mountain” (2005) and “Life of Pi” (2012).

The last one was precisely his acclaimed debut in 3D, but the reactions to the works that followed, “Billy Lynn: The Long Walk” (2016) and “Gemini Project” (2019), also filmed at 120 frames per second, were generally bad. (a technology that brought a much clearer image to the viewer).

Preparing a project about the legend of cinema and martial arts Bruce Lee, the director guarantees that it will not be in 3D or at 120 frames per second: finding new ways of making cinema with technology is an experience that has come to an end.

“The images are really sharp. That’s a lot of pressure. Everything is difficult, so that’s always a lot of pressure. I can’t go into detail about what it’s like to make these films. People haven’t tried for a minute on that scale. I’ve made two feature films -films”, he explained in an interview with IndieWire, reinforcing that the entire process is complicated in ways that the public cannot see.

Referring to the economic and studio pressure of doing something in a way that no one really knew about, he added: “Not just my two films, 3D in general… [é] so bad. Filmmakers are bad. Cinemas are bad. The entire ecosystem is bad. It wasn’t made for [o 3D]. I refuse to complain, to blame technology… the public and the industry are [que] they were not prepared [para o 3D]”.

Lee even talks about the ‘pettiness’ of cinemas, which he says do not have ideal projection conditions.

“People do a bad job, it gives them headaches, it’s just bad. You can’t blame the public for not liking it because it’s bad. And they ask them to spend more money. When it’s good, people like it. It’s simple. 3D is different from 2D. The mind works differently. You can’t compare the two. One is sophisticated and the other looks like a baby. That’s why I developed new projectors. It’s four times brighter. It’s a new language than a Filmmakers have to learn, the public has to get used to it, it takes time”, he explained.

And he reinforced criticism of the way in which 3D itself has been used by Hollywood: “There are bad filmmakers, as simple as that. The public only sees what they see. It’s dark and people get a headache. The filmmakers don’t know what what they are doing with the images. It’s just the beginning. [Mas] 3D is very difficult. I’ll go back to the usual, old-fashioned way of making films.”
