Wahlberg joined a select group of stars who practiced extreme diets for their roles.
In 2014, Mark Wahlberg filmed The Gambler, a crime thriller that ended up not pleasing the public and critics. To make matters worse, he had to go on a highly restrictive diet, resulting in a series of symptoms in his body.
Thus, during an interview with Yahoo Movies, the actor revealed that, at the time, the plan he followed to lose weight left him quite “unhappy”. He also claims that even his wife questioned the diet, worried about his health.
“I’m a big foodie. I had dinner with a group and just watched them eat. I had a huge desire for anything and everything. My wife said, ‘Why are you torturing yourself?'”
According to The New York Times, Wahlberg lost about 70 pounds by diving into a doctor-supervised liquid-based diet. The program consisted of 240 ml of almond milk, three times a day, leaving the actor, literally, with blue lips due to malnutrition.
In The Gambler (in the original), Wahlberg plays Jim Bennett, a literature professor with an irrepressible gambling addiction. This uncontrollable mania threatens to destroy his career, putting him in trouble with some gangsters.
