Hailed as the film that defined the genre of ‘found footage’ at the movies, ‘Blair Witch’ It has already undergone some attempts at sequels or remakes, but there are those who are not very satisfied with it. Recently, actors Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard It is michael williams issued an open letter to the Lionsgateasking for a “more robust compensation for his work on the 1999 blockbuster”. The trio also asks to be consulted on any future films or projects that use ‘Blair Witch’ as a base.

The statement is a response to the announcement made by Lionsgate and Blumhouse earlier this month about plans to revitalize the franchise with a new film in the universe of ‘Blair Witch’. According to director Adam Fogelson, from Lionsgate, it is a new vision that aims to reintroduce the classic to a new generation. It is worth noting that Lionsgate acquired the rights to the film in 2003, when it purchased independent distributor Artisan Entertainment.

According to the actors’ open letter, each of them pocketed US$300,000 after purchasing the film, which would later raise US$248 million. The three remember that the film was filmed in one week, with improvised lines and budget restrictions, and they used their own names for the characters.

What they want is to receive a residual portion of the profits obtained through intellectual property ‘Blair Witch’. The actors are asking for the equivalent of what would be paid to them under an agreement reached with SAG-AFTRA, the Hollywood actors’ union, if the three were represented by the entity at the time.

Lionsgate, which has not yet commented on the matter, has already made some attempts to revitalize ‘Blair Witch’. In 2016, a surprise sequel grossed US$45 million globally, and an Escape Room remains in operation to this day in Las Vegas, USA.

In ‘Blair Witch’, a group of three young filmmakers disappear while entering a Maryland forest to film a documentary about a local legend. Years later, the camera they used is found. The film is available for streaming on Telecine.
