Vocalist Tony Kakko, in an interview with Friday 13th Metal, explained that at the time this name made sense since they are Finns who came from the cold (arctic) and had a lot of influence from symphonic aspects (sonata).
“Artica is a reference to cold, of course. It has to do with cold. As for Sonata, I think the definition is more or less something like a small piece of classical music or something. I checked that at the time and, yes, so it’s a little piece of classical music, and in the music of that time especially, we had a lot of keyboards and stuff like that, and some influences from groups that were more influenced by that stuff, or at least classical music. So it really fit in well, Sonata and Arctica. We’re a little piece of arctic music.”

What is a sonata?
According to the Harmonia Produções website, sonata is a common term in the world of classical music: “It is a style of music with an instrumental aspect, that is, the musical part is valued more than the lyrics of the song itself. Term originating from the Latin sonare, which aimed at instrumental music.
The term sonata refers to music made to “sound”, or music by instruments, as opposed to sung music. There was no well-defined way of interpreting the sonata style. In the period known as Baroque, sonatas were composed for wind or string instrumentalists. This type of musician was called a soloist musician. The songs were accompanied by basso continuo, where the bass was played with the left hand with the help of a viola.
