In another episode of “Enigmas do Rock”, Fabrício Mazocco commented on the creation of the song “Noite e Dia”, composed by Lobão and Júlio Barroso and famous in the version by Marina Lima.

“It was New Year’s Eve 1982 and the band Gang 90 was invited to play at the New Year’s Eve party in the city of Florianópolis, in Santa Catarina. The band did not yet have an album ready. They already had several hits playing on radio stations all over the country. Brazil, like ‘Lost in the Jungle’.

That afternoon, Júlio Barroso, leader of the band, spent the whole afternoon drinking. It was Júlio who created Gang 90. They sang the first song, which was ‘ Nosso Louco Amor ‘, and then, as soon as it ended, Júlio Barroso took the microphone and said that the band was part of a cult. He said that at that moment they needed to go backstage, to the dressing room, to have good vibes and take those good vibes to the audience. The band didn’t understand anything. They hadn’t agreed on any of that. Everyone got off the stage and went to the dressing room, not knowing what was happening.

There are two versions of this output. Lobão, the drummer of Gang 90 at the time, says in his book that, during the afternoon, when he got there, he saw that the drums were in terrible condition and wouldn’t last long. He told Júlio that they needed another battery, but Júlio replied that he wouldn’t have time. When the show started, in the first song, Lobão ended up breaking all the drum heads. There was no more playing. He would have signaled to Júlio, who ended the show right there.

Another version, told in a book about Gang 90 and its album, says that it was Júlio who made this decision without informing the band. When they got to the dressing room and people complained, Júlio said that he hadn’t formed Gang 90 to play for ‘spoiled playboys’ who were in the audience. Despite opposition from band members, he left and left.

Lobão says in his book that, when they got into the car, he told the driver to take them to the best hotel in the city, as he didn’t want to stay in the hotel where they were staying before. Arriving at the hotel, Júlio acted in the ‘Júlio Barroso’ way, demanding the best suite. The attendant was able to arrange a suite for him. The band then went up and talked, especially Júlio Barroso and Lobão, who were great friends, about various topics, including monogamy.

At one point, Lobão said: ‘Look, Júlio, I need to tell you something. I’m in love with two women’. One of them is Alice Pink Pank, who was one of the vocalists of Gang 90. She was not present that night because she had gone to visit her family in Europe. But a big detail is that Alice was Júlio Barroso’s girlfriend. ‘The other woman I’m in love with, and who I’m confessing now, is the singer Marina Lima, for whom I play drums at her shows’, said Lobão.

Júlio looked at him, reflected for a moment and replied: ‘Lobão, I also need to confess something to you. I’m in love with the same two women you’re in love with.’ They stood there, looking at each other, talking a little in silence. So Júlio proposed: ‘Let’s resolve this later’. Lobão picked up the guitar, started strumming some chords, and phrases soon appeared. They started composing right there, based on this passion shared by the two women. This love story inspired a song at that time, called ‘Noite e Dia’, in 1982.”
