Teófilo Gutierrez, in an interview with the South American press, revealed that his stay in Portugal could have taken on different aspects. Now 38 years old, the striker had a spell at Sporting in 2015/16, but according to him, he was very close to playing on the other side of the Second Circular.

«I was at River Plate and they didn’t want to sell me to Benfica. They made offers and River refused without telling me anything. If I had known, I would have gone! It was a big European club, and at that time it played in Champions, reached the European finals. When I arrived at Sporting, coach Jorge Jesus told me this situation, that he wanted to sign me two or three times when I was at Benfica. River didn’t tell my agent, coach Gallardo didn’t want me, but they didn’t communicate with me”, he began by revealing to DSports.

Currently at Real Cartagena, Gutierrez reinforced in the interview that, if he had known the proposals of the red, he would certainly have accepted: «Benfica was willing to pay. It wasn’t much, but it was a lot for me. Knowing that a team with as much prestige as Benfica wants you, a team that can produce great stars, is something very beautiful. When I sat down and he (Jorge Jesus) said that to me, I was cold. If he had known, he would have gone! »
