Shortly after the appeal by the Players’ UnionNilton Fernandes passed away at the age of 45, after trying to fight kidney cancer, which had already spread to the former midfielder’s bone structure.

«Boavista FC deeply regrets the passing of Nilton Fernandes, a former Cape Verdean international who represented the club at the end of the last century» reads the Boavista statement issued this Sunday.

The Cape Verdean international (eight caps) had several spells at Portuguese clubs during his career. He represented Boavista, Gondomar SC, Esposende, CD Aves, Gil Vicente, FC Marco, SC Salgueiros and FC Penafiel, before heading abroad.

He wore the jerseys of Ethnikos Achnas and Akritas Chlorakas (Cyprus), Maribor (Slovenia), Chernomoretz (Bulgaria) and Ironi Bat Yam (Israel), where he hung up his boots after the 2011/2012 season.
