It looks like the development of the foldable iPhone is giving Apple even more headaches than expected. According to more recent rumors, the company is considering postponing the launch of the device from the end of 2026 to the beginning of 2027 due to problems purchasing parts, and would have transferred engineers who worked on the Apple Vision Pro to advance the development of the brand’s first foldable.

According to information from AlphaBiz, Apple’s initial objective was to launch its “Flip” iPhone in September 2026, but the forecast was adjusted to the beginning of 2027 in order to guarantee the manufacture of all components for assembly and screen improvements. .

The latter, by the way, continues to be one of the main points that would be blocking the debut of the foldable iPhone. Apple is unhappy with current flexible screen technology and seeks to reduce reflections and minimize creases in the hinge region as much as possible.

It is said that the company would be developing its own solutions to reduce creases on the display by filling internal layers of the screen with polymetric materials, such as silicone or acrylate.

“Apple is rumored to be discussing supply orders [de tela] with LG Display and Samsung Display,” says Digitimes, claiming that “Apple has high requirements for display specifications.”

It is also revealed that the company carried out an internal employee adjustment and would have moved part of the Vision Pro development team to work on foldable devices, with the aim of accelerating the project.

Apple is not satisfied with current screens

The new information reinforces that, unlike rival companies that have been investing in the foldable smartphone segment since 2019, Apple is still not happy with its current flexible screens.

This is because the malleable panels offer a high level of reflection, the noticeable presence of the crease in the hinge region and high fragility due to their plastic finish, which can scratch with light pressure from a fingernail.

Apple’s ambitious — and perhaps utopian — desire is to reduce all these problems to a performance very close to current rigid screens, and all this with a greater challenge: launching the foldable iPhone with the thickness of a current iPhone when closed.

We still don’t know if Apple’s initial plan is still valid to launch the first iPhone with a flip format similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Motorola Razr Ultra or if the brand has decided to bet on the book format equivalent to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Google Pixel Fold.

There are rumors that Apple is also working on a foldable iPad that could replace the iPad Mini in the future, but this will all depend on progress in developing flexible screen technology.
