In a demographic scenario in constant transformation, Brazil’s elderly population faces the challenge of re-entering the job market and returning to the classroom. With approximately 10,000 candidates over the age of 60 enrolled in this year’s Enem (National High School Exam), the numbers reveal a growing search for learning and professional development opportunities.

In the South Fluminense region, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, the AAPVR Group is a protagonist in this movement, presenting comprehensive projects that range from health care to training on digital platforms. And there’s news coming. Starting in March this year, the entity will offer free professional courses to members and the community in general. Such initiatives aim not only to provide comprehensive care to the elderly population, but also to prepare them to experience aging independently.

Recent data from IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), referring to the 2022 Census, highlight a significant increase in the elderly population, which now totals 32,113,490 inhabitants, representing 15.6% of the total. This 56% growth compared to 2010 highlights the urgent need to rethink strategies for reintegrating these individuals into the job market.

In order to adapt teaching formats to meet the specific needs of elderly people, whether in university classrooms or training courses, we must consider their life experiences, aspirations and challenges to be overcome.

The increase in the number of elderly candidates in Enem signals a significant social change. The challenge is to ensure that society as a whole is ready to support this transition, promoting an inclusive culture and encouraging lifelong learning as a fundamental right for all generations.
