The Broad National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15) — considered the preview of the country’s official inflation — recorded a 0.36% increase in prices in March, according to IBGE. The biggest influence comes from the Food and beverages group, with an increase of 0.91% in the month.

To a large extent, rising food prices are the result of adverse climate effects on some products, such as onions, potatoes and even eggs. In the case of fruit, the rise in Brazilian exports, which grow due to problems in other producing countries, also affect prices on the domestic market. The rise in olive oil, which is expected to continue at more expensive levels in 2024, is caused by the drop in European olive production.
