NIn a statement, the National Union of Workers in the Railway Sector (SNTSF) and the Federation of Transport and Communications Unions (Fectrans) explained that the delivery of the strike notice, in the middle of this month, “results from the opinion gathered from the workers, about the proposals that Medway has on the table” and which do not meet “the expectations of those who work in this company nor do they resolve problems of discrimination between workers that have been increasing”.
According to the unions, “in this negotiation process for the 2024 salary increase, the administration presented a proposal for an increase of 3.5%, claiming that it was a percentage above the inflation rate.”
“We refuse, due to the fact that it does not meet our demand, nor the valorization of the lowest salaries”, they indicated, highlighting that “in general, the proposed increase for the lowest salaries would be around 32 euros, well below the increase in SMN [salário mínimo nacional]which was 60 euros”.
According to the unions, “after several attempts at negotiation”, and despite considering “the proposal presented by the administration, which would be 1% plus a fixed amount of 60 euros, was insufficient”, it informed the workers that the process was completed, and that it would be applied at the end of March”.
The unions later met with the company, but did not reach an agreement.
This Wednesday, on the eve of the strike, Medway management proposed a meeting for April 11th, the unions indicated in another statement.
“But if there is a desire to resolve a conflict, it would have been more useful to schedule this meeting at an opportune time, which perhaps could even have avoided today’s strike”, “which continues”, they highlighted.
The unions consider that the administration “has not realized that workers, while recognizing developments, consider that their professions are not sufficiently valued and that there are other important problems to be resolved”.
