Jorge Fonseca wins gold medal at the Antalya Grand Slam

Olympic judoka Jorge Fonseca won the gold medal in -100 kg this Sunday in the Antalya Grand Slambringing to three the number of Portuguese podiums achieved at the event in Turkey.

In the final, the 15th in the world ranking in his class was supposed to face the Canadian Shady Elnahas, sixth in the hierarchy, but he withdrew due to injury, handing the victory to the Portuguese, bronze medalist at the Tokyo2020 Olympic Games.

Previously, Fonseca beat Uzbek Rustam Shorakhmatov (45th), Dutch Michael Korrel (fifth) and Russian Arman Adamian (10th) on the way to the final, achieving another victory in Antalya, after the 2022 gold.

It is Jorge Fonseca’s first major triumph in 2024, after the silver medal at the Linz Grand Prix, adding important points towards Olympic qualification for Paris2024.

Even today, Patrícia Sampaio finished the race in seventh place after falling in the -78 kg repechage, with the 11th in the world ranking winning two fights, losing two others.

In total, Portugal leaves Antalya with three medals, adding this gold to Tais Pina’s silver and João Fernando’s bronze.
