Images of the strongest earthquake in the last 25 years in Taiwan

At least four people died and more than 700 were injured this Wednesday, after a earthquake of magnitude greater than 7 on the Richter scale reach the coast of Taiwan. This was the strongest earthquake to hit the island in the last 25 years.

According to the Taiwan National Fire Department, the earthquake caused at least four fatalities and all deaths occurred in the Hualien region, the closest to the earthquake’s epicenter, off the east of the island.

Three of the victims died and more than 40 were injured while hiking on the Taroko Dekaron trail in Xiulin township. Another person died after the vehicle he was driving was hit by falling rocks near a road tunnel.

In the last update, the Taiwanese government said that more than 700 people were injured.

At least 26 buildings collapsed, more than half in Hualien. In one of the buildings, 22 people were rescued.

The earthquake was 15.5 kilometers deep, according to Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Administration.

“It was very strong. It felt like the house was going to collapse,” said Chang Yu-Lin, a 60-year-old hospital worker in Taipei, quoted by Reuters.
