BMW CEO says the EU should review CO2 targets

The European Union (EU) has ambitious objectives, with a view to decarbonizing the bloc. For BMW CEO Oliver Zipse, CO2 objectives should be reviewed.

BMW CEO Oliver Zipse said the EU must review its CO2 targets as pressure on car manufacturers to reduce carbon emissions increases next year, ahead of a total ban on the sale of new cars with fossil fuel combustion engines in 2035.

We believe that a comprehensive review of CO2 emissions legislation in the EU is essential.

The executive said during the company's annual earnings conference on Thursday, according to Automotive News Europe.

For Zipse, next year's increased CO2 targets, which require a 25% reduction in emissions from the fleet of new passenger cars sold in Europe compared to 2021 figures, will be difficult for the industry.

By the end of 2025, the world will realize that it is not that easy. At that point, the pressure will be significant for the European automotive industry.

Executives want the EU to rethink measures

Calling for a softening of measures, Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume also said that “it makes no sense for the industry to have to pay penalties when the conditions for the increase in electric vehicles are not assured”.

Renault CEO Luca de Meo also called for a review, via an open letter to EU legislators.

Despite BMW's confidence in achieving its goals, Zipse warned of customer resistance to the regulatory push for electric vehicles.

Something that is not taken into account is that it is a free decision made by millions of customers. It's not like energy infrastructure, where you can turn off one thing and then something else happens automatically.
