The Alqueva Dam is getting closer and closer to its maximum level. The Alqueva Dam has not been completely filled for more than ten years, which now seems to be getting closer and closer to happening.

With the rain that has been falling in recent days, the volume of water stored has increased substantially.

According to information provided by EDIA- Empresa de Desenvolvimento e Infra-estruturas do Alqueva, SA, as of today, April 1st, the Dam’s elevation is 151.28 meters corresponding to a stored volume of 3904.42hm3. According to the company responsible for managing Alqueva, over the weekend alone, the elevation will rise by more than 30 cm.

Remember that the last time the Dam reached its maximum level – a level of 152 meters corresponding to a stored volume of water of 4150 hm3 – was in 2010.

The Alqueva Dam, also designated as the largest artificial lake in Europe, celebrates its 22nd year of existence in 2024. It was on February 8, 2002, 22 years ago, that the dam’s floodgates were closed, starting the filling of the Alqueva reservoir, the largest national water reserve.

Alqueva is today a development factor in the Alentejo Region and is one of the most important water reserves in the territory. It is through this Dam that it is possible to allow all the features of the Alqueva Multi-Purpose Development.
