Internal doctors at Viana Hospital practice births in simulators

The Gynecology and Obstetrics Service of the Alto Minho Local Health Unit (ULSAM), in Viana do Castelo, invested in “innovation” and included in its annual evaluation of the Specialty-Specific Training Internship the carrying out of a practical test with simulation scenarios .

This is a scenario similar to what is expected to be carried out in the final assessment of these inmates from 2025 onwards.

This is because the specialty of Gynecology and Obstetrics will have changes in the national assessment format and being an “avant-garde specialty”, the College of Specialty of the Medical Association made an “interesting upgrade” by investing in the area of simulation, as a way of validate the acquisition of skills acquired during training.

In a statement, ULSAM explains that, in collaboration with the School of Medicine of the University of Minho, which provided the simulation models, the intern doctors with specific training had the opportunity to train how to act in simulation scenarios. F

Doctor Paula Pinheiro confided that “the service intends for simulation to become a reality, not only applicable to interns undergoing specific training in the Gynecology and Obstetrics Service, but also to specialist doctors, as more developed countries are promoting this type of procedure, as it was concluded that nowadays the use of simulation scenarios is fundamental for the development of clinical skills in rare and/or complex critical events”.

The Service Director recalls that in obstetrics, interdisciplinarity is constant, with “teamwork being of the utmost importance and serves to exemplify the need for obstetric emergencies, as these are rare, serious, and opportunities for real training are scarce, Therefore, the practical training of health professionals is essential, using simulators and resolving clinical scenarios”.

He also mentioned that the service would like to move forward with a new project, promoting this action at ULSAM, also inviting the other professionals involved to participate, nursing, anesthetists, neonatologists, because for “effective action in these situations”, it is necessary “not only theoretical knowledge, such as technical and non-technical skills, communication and organization of teamwork”.

“Everyone in the service hopes to have the support of the new Administration, which is committed to research and training as a way of improving healthcare for our population, so that we can soon achieve this new challenge,” he said, quoted in a statement. .
