A Marta Temido’s departure to the European Parliament reignited the debate on the socialist candidacy for the 2025 municipal elections. Marta Temido is still the president of the socialist council (she is expected to leave in the next internal elections, with no date yet set) and when she arrived in the position she showed her willingness to a candidacy for the capital’s chamber. “I would like to be a mayor,” she said in an interview with Expresso last summer. The choice of Pedro Nuno Santos for the Europeans thus leaves the scenario open. The decision will still take some time, but the party will begin to debate the issue in the coming months in local structures. Duarte Cordeiro, who wanted to leave public office, continues to be the most talked about name and an easy choice for Pedro Nuno Santos. But first the party will debate the idea of uniting the left in Lisbon — PS councilor Pedro Anastácio has already challenged the left for a convergence in Lisbon in an opinion article in Expresso —, an idea that resonates with the party leadership. The candidate will therefore have to have this profile and, in addition to Duarte Cordeiro, two names are mentioned that are consistent with this possibility: Mariana Vieira da Silva and Alexandra Leitão.
