Dev Patel’s action film is scheduled to hit Brazilian cinemas in May.

With Monkey Man, Dev Patel took the meaning of shedding blood, sweat and tears for one’s work very seriously. By taking the risk of performing all of his fight sequences and stunts, he ended up collecting a series of injuries. The film is scheduled to arrive in Brazilian cinemas in May.

In his debut as a director, Dev was partnered with none other than Jordan Peele, director of Get Out! and Nope, to bring their vision of what a true modern action thriller should be to the screen. The producer highlighted that “I had never seen anyone put their heart, soul, body, mind and energy into a story as much as this man [Patel]”.

“South Asian John Wick”?: Dev Patel doesn’t want people to compare his new action film with recycled Hollywood formulas

This turned out to be literal, considering the range of scars that the actor has carried since the recordings, which took place in Mumbai. He ended up breaking his foot, his hand, dislocating his shoulder and even getting an eye infection while filming the action sequences. Even though he was injured, he continued working.

“You can see in the film that sometimes there are some bandages. That’s from surgery. They put in a screw and the doctor said, ‘You can’t put pressure on this. If it bends, it will be like pulling a bent nail out of wood. You’ll ruin your hand.’ I went straight back to the action scenes,” the debutant filmmaker told Variety.

While the protagonist was injured, all the martial arts choreographies were changed at the last minute to movements in which he could support himself with just one hand. But the sudden changes didn’t stop there, as production also experienced a series of technical difficulties.

“We face catastrophes every day. Originally we were going to have an amazing Hollywood stunt team, and then the borders were closed [devido à pandemia]. There wasn’t a single piece of camera equipment that worked properly,” Patel said.

Local stuntmen found through YouTube were hastily called in to replace the supporting cast that would come from the United States. For the camera, a construction rope was attached to the equipment in place of the broken crane.

Still, Dev Patel’s debut feature is being seen as one of the biggest bets in action cinema in recent years. Monkey Man has a 92% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and is being compared to great titles in the genre, such as John Wick.
